That includes inventively exuberant proper and surnames and a perfect wave momentousness as to veins of true gold in the repository of art predating the (by some) supposed renaissance of those self-beatified diggers of the 1960s.Īnderson’s shipwrecked vehicle stays afloat by virtue of his understanding of Pynchon’s key pitch, his change-up, which only seems to be a juicy fastball right over the Hollywood plate. So it is that our starter’s (namely Pynchon’s) arsenal of other pitches must carry much of the thematic load here. Maybe if he searched through it long enough, late enough into the night, he’d find something that might help-some tiny forgotten scrap of his life he didn’t even know was missing, something that would make all the difference now.”) Anderson resorts to a voice-over in the person of Sortilege, a woman friend of the protagonist, Larry Sportello (whom everyone addresses as Doc, due to his famously finagling the partners of a medical clinic to rent out an office for his private investigation business ) but her discursive energies, heavily laced with astrological rubrics, do not coincide with those of Pynchon. His fingers, with a mind of their own, began to creep toward the plastic hedge. (For example: “‘You need to find true love, Doc.’ Actually, he thought, I’ll settle for finding my way through this. There are features of Pynchon’s text broaching subtleties and sophistications exponentially transcending the addled dialogue of those acting out. And Anderson’s film copiously demonstrates that he and his vehicle have bought into that more comprehensive and vastly more difficult to comprehend motive. The year is 1970 and although the whole population has not been concussed with billiard cues this is a shipment of players that gives outsiders the distinct idea that the locals have enlisted in a gigantic wave of franchising their presumably amazing stories.īut though Pynchon is a resolved and deft student of entropy, his Inherent Vice is far more than that. A likely response to Paul Thomas Anderson’s film, Inherent Vice (2014), a rendition of Thomas Pynchon’s novel, from 2009, under the same title, would be to maintain that the principals have gorged a bit on the peculiar impertinence of California-specifically, LA-style.

However it is not completely portable in that there are some registry entries made but it is much faster than Open Office, so if anyone is not too concerned about the registry entries then it could be a consideration. Another option to Open Office is portable Tomahawk which can be downloaded off the Softpedia web site - about 5mb installed. Even if a driver could be made portable, then all it could do is print the entire page or selection. "The Girl from Ipanema" won a Grammy in 1965 for record of the year and Gilberto received nominations for best new artist and best vocal performance. "Getz/Gilberto" sold more than 2 million copies and "The Girl from Ipanema," released as a single with Astrud Gilberto the only vocalist, became an all-time standard, often ranked just behind "Yesterday" as the most covered song in modern times. Tall and tan and young and lovely The girl from Ipanema goes walking And when she passes Each one she passes goes, "Ah" But her words, translated from the Portuguese by Norman Gimbel, would be remembered like few others from the era. "When we were finished performing the song, Joao turned to Stan, and said something like: 'Tomorrow Astrud sing on record… What do you think?' Stan was very receptive, in fact very enthusiastic he said it was a great idea. ' Later on, while rehearsing with Stan, as they were in the midst of going over the song 'The Girl from Ipanema,' Joao casually asked me to join in, and sing a chorus in English, after he had just sung the first chorus in Portuguese. "I begged him to tell me what it was, but he adamantly refused, and would just say: 'Wait and see. In a 2002 interview with friends posted on her web site, Astrud Gilberto remembered her husband saying he had a surprise for her at the recording studio. And as much as I love the iOS versions of OmniFocus, there’s always something that bothers me when I’m in a hurry but I need to get some actions saved quickly: as others have outlined before, I think I’d really enjoy a “mini OmniFocus” that’s exclusively aimed at entering tasks in seconds without loading the entire database. That’s an interesting concept: as OmniFocus can be integrated with OS X, accessed to from a web browser or even linked to by other apps, there are ways to quickly get items into it without following the usual pattern of opening the app + writing down a new action, or launching the desktop Quick Entry window manually. Over the past weeks, however, rather than reading tutorials on how to get the most out of OmniFocus or learning about other users’ setups (something that I usually love to do, by the way, as my Instapaper queue can prove), I decided to play around with tools and utilities provided by The Omni Group to customize the way you can get actions into OmniFocus without actually using OmniFocus. With an update to the iPhone app around the corner and a major 2.0 update for the Mac coming out sometime in the next months, there’s plenty of features to look forward to. If you’ve been reading MacStories in the past few months, you know we care about the latest OmniFocus updates and new features implemented by the developers, but more importantly we, like many others, have fallen in love with the iPad version of OmniFocus, which contrary to expectations has turned out to be a great portable counterpart that retains most of the functionalities of the desktop OF without sacrificing usability – actually adding new intuitive schemes, navigation options, and more. It’s not possible to get a link back to the original message, but it’s still outrageously helpful. It is no secret I’m a big fan of The Omni Group’s OmniFocus for Mac and iOS, as over time it has become my “trusted system” (as people like to call great applications you can rely on nowadays) to organize actions (tasks), contexts and, in general, stuff I have to do and don’t want to forget about. The server takes the subject and body, puts them in an action, and wedges it right in to the database in your Sync Server account. Mail Drop is simple: forward on or create new emails that you’d like to show up in your OmniFocus Inbox to a specific email address. The Omni Sync Server has a very helpful feature: Mail Drop. Includes a link back to the original message. And clipping is simple: Control-click a message and choose Send to OmniFocus. There are so many features in the last three clients that naming would be futile, but Postbox adds a few more. Postbox.appĪnd to round out the OS X mail clients, meet Postbox. But it’s really simple: simply control-click a message and choose Create OmniFocus Task. You can read all about it in Airmail’s support article. Similar to MailMate, AirMail has its own integration with OmniFocus that works great. And it clips to OmniFocus 2 quite nicely here’s how. Mailplane is a Gmail- (or Google Apps) specific app that combines the native web experience with OS X niceties. Hitting a keystroke with the latest version (MailMate is progressing towards 2.0, and beta builds are available for download) pops up a pre-filled Quick Entry window with an action title and note. It’s advanced, and the developer has built-in support for many different apps: both text-editors and task managers. MailMate is a keyboard-centric, markdown-supporting, super-smart client for OS X. Make sure to have a Clippings Shortcut set up. In macOS 10.14, Mojave, Clip-O-Tron isn’t needed. In some earlier versions of macOS, a helper app ( Clip-O-Tron) was needed to help with the process. The email client bundled with OS X is able to send over the whole message - it even links back to the original message. Triaging email into OmniFocus can be quick and easy, and that’s what we’re going to accomplish here with helper tools. Someone came up with a really good idea a long while ago: processing email into actions-and consolidating all your actions into just one inbox-can bring about piece of mind. Let’s just get this out of the way - email is required for work (and usually personal) life, and a lot of the time it comes with actionable items. It’s going to be hard to tell whether there’s an intrinsic problem with them or whether it’s just technical,” Lovell-Badge said. Scientists say it is not clear whether the barrier to more advanced development is merely technical or has a more fundamental biological cause. In April, researchers in China created synthetic embryos from monkey cells and implanted them into the wombs of adult monkeys, a few of which showed the initial signs of pregnancy but none of which continued to develop beyond a few days. But when they were implanted into the wombs of female mice, they did not develop into live animals. The synthetic embryos grown from mouse cells were reported to appear almost identical to natural embryos. There is also a significant unanswered question on whether these structures, in theory, have the potential to grow into a living creature. “If the whole intention is that these models are very much like normal embryos, then in a way they should be treated the same,” Lovell-Badge said. The development highlights how rapidly the science in this field has outpaced the law, and scientists in the UK and elsewhere are already moving to draw up voluntary guidelines to govern work on synthetic embryos. “It’s beautiful and created entirely from embryonic stem cells.” “Our human model is the first three-lineage human embryo model that specifies amnion and germ cells, precursor cells of egg and sperm,” Żernicka-Goetz told the Guardian before the talk. At this stage, the embryo does not yet have a beating heart, gut or beginnings of a brain, but the model showed the presence of primordial cells that are the precursor cells of egg and sperm. The model structures, each grown from a single embryonic stem cell, reached the beginning of a developmental milestone known as gastrulation, when the embryo transforms from being a continuous sheet of cells to forming distinct cell lines and setting up the basic axes of the body. But, speaking at the conference, Żernicka-Goetz described cultivating the embryos to a stage just beyond the equivalent of 14 days of development for a natural embryo. The full details of the latest work, from the Cambridge-Caltech lab, are yet to be published in a journal paper. Since then, a race has been under way to translate this work into human models, and several teams have been able to replicate the very earliest stages of development. Previously, Żernicka-Goetz’s team and a rival group at the Weizmann Institute in Israel showed that stem cells from mice could be encouraged to self-assemble into early embryo-like structures with an intestinal tract, the beginnings of a brain and a beating heart. Robin Lovell-Badge, the head of stem cell biology and developmental genetics at the Francis Crick Institute in London, said: “The idea is that if you really model normal human embryonic development using stem cells, you can gain an awful lot of information about how we begin development, what can go wrong, without having to use early embryos for research.” They then pick up the course of development much further along by looking at pregnancy scans and embryos donated for research. The motivation for the work is for scientists to understand the “black box” period of development that is so called because scientists are only allowed to cultivate embryos in the lab up to a legal limit of 14 days. It would be illegal to implant them into a patient’s womb, and it is not yet clear whether these structures have the potential to continue maturing beyond the earliest stages of development. There is no near-term prospect of the synthetic embryos being used clinically. “We can create human embryo-like models by the reprogramming of cells,” she told the meeting. Prof Magdalena Żernicka-Goetz, of the University of Cambridge and the California Institute of Technology, described the work in a plenary address on Wednesday at the International Society for Stem Cell Research’s annual meeting in Boston. The structures do not have a beating heart or the beginnings of a brain, but include cells that would typically go on to form the placenta, yolk sac and the embryo itself. However, the work also raises serious ethical and legal issues as the lab-grown entities fall outside current legislation in the UK and most other countries. These SCD fields are added so that when a field is changed, for example, a customer’s address, the existing record in the dimension table is updated to indicate that the record isn’t active and a new record is inserted with an active flag. These fields are collectively referenced as the SCD fields (as shown in the following code) going forward in this post. For example, record effective date, record end date, and active record indicator are typically added to track if a record is active or not. The first step to implement SCD for a given dimension table is to create the dimension table with SCD tracking attributes. In this post, we only show the important SQL statements the complete SQL code is available in scd2_sample_customer_dim.sql. lab2_cluster.yaml – Creates a new cluster and loads TPC data.lab2.yaml – Loads TPC data into an existing cluster. To get started, we use one of two AWS CloudFormation templates from Amazon Redshift Labs: The following diagram shows how a regular dimensional table is converted to a type 2 dimension table. The following figure is the process flow diagram. We show how to create a type 2 dimension table by adding slowly changing tracking columns, and we go over the extract, transform, and load (ETL) merge technique, demonstrating the SCD process. To demonstrate this, we use the customer table from the TPC-DS benchmark dataset. We go through the best practices and anti-patterns. This post walks you through the process of implementing SCDs on an Amazon Redshift cluster. Type 3 (Previous value) – The value for specific columns in maintained as a separate attributeįor this walkthrough, you should have the following prerequisites:.Type 2 (Maintain history) – All changes are recorded and versions are tracked with dates and flags.Type 1 (No history) – The dimension table reflects the latest version no history is maintained.Type 0 is when no changes are allowed to the dimension, for example a date dimension that doesn’t change. The range of options for dealing with this involves SCD management methodologies referred to as type 1 to type 7. For historical reporting purposes, it may be necessary to keep a record of the fact that the customer has a change in address. This phenomenon is called a slowly changing dimension (SCD). For example, the shipping address for a customer may change. Over time, the attributes of a given row in a dimension table may change. Dimension and fact tables are joined using the dimension table’s primary key and the fact table’s foreign key. Rows in a dimension table are identified using a unique identifier like a customer identification key, and the fact table’s rows have a referential key pointing to the dimension table’s primary key. The attributes (or columns) of the dimension table provide the business meaning to the measures of the fact table. In a star schema, a dimension is a structure that categorizes the facts and measures in order to enable you to answer business questions. A star schema is a database organization structure optimized for use in a data warehouse. Amazon Redshift is a fully managed, petabyte-scale data warehouse service in the cloud. Ramses II was buried in the Valley of Kings, but had to be replaced because of looting. Click here to read more about Ramses and the plagues. The events do show a link to the capital city of Pi-Ramses and the grueling period Egypt crossed under the rule of Ramses II. Whether or not it did happen as the story tells us, scientists found evidence for the existence of the notorious ten plagues of Egypt (or at least the first nine of them). Known as the departure of the Israelites from Egypt, this event is considered to have happened under the reign of Ramses II. Ramses and MosesĪ much debated issue of religion and history alike is the Exodus. Since the people of Egypt worshiped Ramses II as a god, it also helped to ensure that his son, who at that point commanded the army, would rise to power following his death, without anyone trying to seize the throne. Ramses II defaced the monuments of previous reigning dynasties which had fallen out of favor, and sought to return Egyptian religion to how it had been before the reign of Akhenaton. After reigning for thirty years, Ramses II celebrated the Sed festival, in which the king was turned into a God. The religious impact that Ramses 2 had on Egypt is not to be overlooked either. © kairoinfo4u - Scenes from the battle of Kadesh in Syria Ramses II's Religious Impact Many of these campaigns were completed in the first twenty years of Ramses II's reign. By forming peace treaties with these empires after warring with them, Ramses II helped to solidify Egypt's borders on all sides, allowing for increased internal stability. In addition, his campaigns restored land to Egypt that had been previously lost to these empires. He managed to fend off invasions from the Hittites and Nubians. The military genius of Ramses II helped to secure Egypt's borders from foreign invaders and pirates along the Mediterranean and in Libya. Eventually none of the parties gained victory and Ramesses had to retreat because of logistic difficulties. Ramesses made a tactical error in that fight by dividing his forces, causing one of his divisions to be swept away. Fought in 1274 BC against the Hittites, it was the largest chariot battle ever. Ramses 2's most famous battle is the Battle of Kadesh, which took place at the city of Kadesh (situated in present day Syria). Ramses II's army was 100,000 men strong, enormous for that period in time. Much of his reign was occupied with taking back territories that were lost to Egypt during the rule of other ancient Egyptian pharaohs (most notably Akhenaten) was preoccupied with establishing a monotheistic religion. The reign of Ramses 2 was marked by numerous military battles and he became one of the famous Egyptian pharaohs known for his military strength. In 1951, Stalin created OKB-23 under the direction of Vladimir Mikhailovich Myasishchev to build new long-range bomber designs, forming the bureaus by picking designers out of Tupolev's OKB-156. Andrei Tupolev's OKB-156 had successfully converted the Boeing B-29 Superfortress into the Tupolev Tu-4, while their suggestions to create a more advanced design were ignored as they fell from favour. In the immediate postwar era, the Soviet aircraft establishment was repeatedly upset by Joseph Stalin, who chose favourites and enemies at whim and created chaos within the design bureaus. The Tu-22 was one of the few Soviet jet bombers to see combat: Libyan Tu-22s were used against Tanzania and Chad, and Iraqi Tu-22s were used during the Iran–Iraq War.ĭevelopment Previous efforts Tu-22s were sold to other nations, including Libya and Iraq. The aircraft was later adapted for other roles, notably as the Tu-22R reconnaissance aircraft and as a carrier for the long-range Kh-22 antiship missile. It was produced in small numbers, especially compared to the Tupolev Tu-16 it was designed to replace. It was also a difficult design to fly and maintain. The aircraft was a disappointment, lacking both the speed and range that had been expected. Manufactured by Tupolev, the Tu-22 entered service with the Soviet military in the 1960s. During the presentation they also showed an array of ship customization options, which includes vibrant colors, decals, and patterns. Later in the demo, the Beyond Good and Evil 2 team showed some light aerial combat. Roughly $50,000 has been allocated for HitRecord assets, which is undoubtedly cheaper than a team of Ubisoft artists. It's a neat idea, though some have criticized the system because it pushes people to do work with only the possibility of getting paid. The team is looking for original music and artwork and will pay creators for any assets that are used in the final game. During its E3 press conference, Ubisoft announced a partnership with actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt's collaboration platform HitRecord. The radio station is one of many ways that fans will be able to contribute their own art to the game. It was an original hip hop track performed by a fictional primate and filled with references to the Beyond Good and Evil 2 universe. During this explanation, one of the team members switched on a pirate radio station that will be accessible throughout the game, similar to Grand Theft Auto or SSX 3. The team stressed, however, that there will be extensive customisation options to help you stand out from other humans, hybrid monkeys, or whatever base species you choose. It's an interesting premise, but also a convenient one for offering a limited number of character types. You, however, decide to break out and become a legendary space pirate captain instead. Almost everyone in the system is, therefore, a clone built for a specific purpose. In short, the first colonists were exposed to radiation that made them infertile. While the demo was underway, some of the Beyond Good and Evil 2 team explained the game's lore. There weren't too many streets, or pedestrians, but the flying traffic made it feel like a real, lived-in world. The obvious inspiration can be seen in the temple-like architecture and colorful murals painted on skyscraper sized walls. Ganesha City is based in a continent called New India. Once everyone had been vanquished, the two heroes walked into a makeshift hangar and boarded two vehicles - a gleaming spaceship and a ramshackle hoverbike - before flying outside. That will be crucial, the team said, when choosing abilities and the best way to take down groups. We were also shown a scanner - much like the Detective Mode in Batman: Arkham Knight - which revealed what powers each enemy had equipped. The game, though, is clearly in an early state, so I don't want to knock what will likely be improved. The combat looked a little slow and robotic. The team showed off the basic controls - you have a sword, gun and some swappable powers, including a time-slowing bubble - before dispatching their foes in record time. Two players, working cooperatively, started in an underground temple riddled with mercenaries working for nefarious corporations. It revolved around Ganesha City, the bustling metropolis that featured in last year's cinematic E3 trailer. During a behind-closed-doors presentation, some of the team showed off a playable demo on a planet called Soma. Or at least, there's something that's playable inside Ubisoft's office.
