![]() Why “Sunglasses” though? why not “Athen’s, France?” “Athen’s” is a very good song, a great song even! if I were to put a top 10 together of the songs most essential to understanding the gremlin mindset, it would probably make it. Now for the second question, it’s important to remember that the gremlin mindset’s greatest disciples, black midi, formed the tenets of the gremlin mindset with only a handful of released songs & various live performances, so a band with only two songs being able to scribe important texts to the manifesto is not out of the ordinary. however i am willing to be a medium in telling you if a band/artist practices the gremlin mindset or not. it is a gut feeling whether or not something is apart of the gremlin mindset or not. the gremlin mindset is to be felt, not understood. So, you might be asking me, what the fuck is the gremlin mindset and why are BCNR so essential to this movement despite the lack of music they have out there? to answer your first question, i refuse to tell you as you simply know or you don’t. that changed at the beginning of 2019, but only by so much as “Athen’s, France” and “Sunglasses” are the only songs to their names unless you go digging into bootlegs and finding recorded versions of their live sets. much like their associates/friends black midi, BCNR became well known in the UK music scene for their enigmatic live shows despite the fact that you couldn’t find a song to their name anywhere online until the beginning of last year. formed in the ashes of Quietus-core band Nervous Conditions following accusations of sexual assault against frontman Connor Browne with most members of that band reforming into BCNR (i’ll be shortening the band name to this throughout the article). ![]() However if there is one band who looks to become the most important author of said manifesto and has already provided essential thoughts and scribblings to the gremlin mindset: it’s Black Country, New Road. whether they know it or not, bands/artists like the previously mentioned black midi, Pottery, Jerskin Fendrix, Squid, Sports Team and really, most bands associated with Speedy Wunderground and/or the Windmill in Brixton have all left their invaluable script to the ongoing gremlin manifesto. ![]() what started as a bit following the breakthrough of black midi has now turned into a marker for a specific brand of late millennial/gen z guitar music, usually British. ![]()
